Shawnee was legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast's first design in the United States and remains his only course in the Golf Card network. Originally built around 1910 and subsequently expanded to 27 holes, Shawnee is uniquely situated on the Delaware River with the Pocono Mountains hovering above. In fact, 24 of the 27 holes are located on an island in the middle of the Delaware.
Shawnee's real beauty lies with its routing and simplicity. Tillinghast showed with his very first design how golf courses are puzzles made up of perfectly fitting pieces. Every hole at Shawnee has a place and works with the other holes to create the overall design.
Shawnee first received national attention when it hosted the 1938 PGA Championship, won by Paul Runyan. Since then, many magazines have recommended it as a preferred golf destination, and Golf Digest called it a "must play".
