From rugged mountain properties to the flattest of flat pieces of land, Ross showed his versatility. That is why calls for his services came from around the country. And they came from some of the wealthiest and most powerful names in American society.
In 1916 Ross headed to Florida to build a course that would serve as a proper playground for wealthy guests for the Flagler family. It was the first Ross course built in the state of Florida. In the 1930s and ’40s, it was a regular stop on the professional tour.
Now the course serves as a playable and enjoyable example of Ross architecture. The front nine has an open, flowing feeling to it, as the course winds outward along the marshlands. The back nine has a totally different feeling, with tree-lined holes that place a premium on shot location and strategy. The old oak trees, draped with Spanish moss, lend a wonderful feel of the South and provide plenty of character.
Of course, there is a lot more to a stay at Ponce de Leon than just the golf course and the newly renovated hotel. Nearby St. Augustine is one of the most charming cities in America, and it is a short drive south on I-95 to the new World Golf Hall of Fame.
